BUSINESSWOMAN Siphokazi Thiam, based in Kokstad, has mobilized a group of young men facing the challenge of drug addiction to get proactive and pick up garbage to ensure a clean environment under the theme of Mental Health Awareness.

On Wednesday, the group eagerly cleaned a street near Shayamoya, joined by Thiam and her staff members.

Thiam said the main focus was not only to keep the area clean but to rehabilitate the group and also help them play a meaningful role in society.

Some young men trapped on drugs feel rejected by society. They even feel worthless. My initiative aims to restore hope in them and to help them become responsible individuals in our community, Thiam said.

She also called on the community to show love to drug addicts and to stop labelling them as “amaPhara”.

She added that her team worked very hard to bring the young men into one place and form part of the programme. She said this will be an ongoing programme until the young men are transformed.

Last year, Thiam launched her first book called Becoming, which focuses on her life experience from her childhood to where she is now.
